Participation at the Urban Speculations: Cities, Technologies, Futures Conference, 4-6 February 2025

By admin

One more of our project’s stops was the “Urban Speculations: Cities, Technologies, Futures Conference”, held from the 4th to the 6th of February 2025 in Lüneburg, Germany! (Learn more about the conference here https://www.leuphana.de/en/research-centers/cdc/events/conferences/urban-speculations-cities-technologies-futures.html).

At this conference, the Project’s researcher Dr. Kostas Gourzis along with Dr. Georgia Alexandri, from the Karlsruher Institut für Technologie (KIT)  (https://www.itas.kit.edu/english/staff_alexandri_georgia.php), discussed housing financialization, touristification and gentrification.

Specifically, their collaborative work documented how gentrification in Athens has been closely following the country’s productive shifts, and how it has been actively facilitated by debt restructuring and financialisation since the onset of the 2008/2009 Global Crisis.

These findings sparked an interesting discussion regarding theories of gentrification and how cities can defend themselves against the process.

We would like to thank the organizers of the conference for the opportunity and participants for their engagement, and we look forward to continuing these important conversations in the future!

Stay tuned, as an exciting hybrid workshop is on the way!
